Steller's Jays

Image
Hi Folks, Reports are minimal as we move into September. So I wanted to showcase a common bird you can see on the bog; the Steller's Jay. This Blue bird makes South Alaska its home all year round. But they do move around and don't necessarily stay in Baxter Bog the way Chikadees and Nut Hatches reside on the bog.  While these blue beauties are fun to look at they are less fun to hear. Their harsh and unsettling screech was once described to me as a "dull saw failing to cut through wood" by a fellow birder. Here is more information about them from the Audubon Society . As always if you have any information about the natural and seasonal happenings on Baxter Bog, please let me know at hot.bog.goss@gmail.com Baxter Bog Birder P.S. A group of Steller's Jays is often called a Party or a Band.

Mushrooms continue to delight on the bog

Image
Hi Folks, I'm receiving reports of a greater variety of mushrooms sprouting up on the bog. Someone sent a picture of coprinus micaceus, which they are quoted as writing it reminds them of a mushroom village. In another report, due to the high water level one can really see the engineering behind the bog's water flow. Water is visibly flowing from the bog through culverts draining North and Northeast within the bog water overflow ditches. Baxter Bog Birder

Water levels are high on the Bog

Hi Folks, I've been hearing reports that all this rain is raising the water in the bog too unseasonable levels. The water level at the Lillie Pad lake are past the overlook. The North bridge now crosses noticeably high water in the water ditch. This is of course due to the record breaking rainfall we have received in July and August.  Hi Folks, I have received reports of mushrooms sprouting along the bog. Apparently the most noticeable  are the Aminita Muscaria, which are the mushrooms with the beautiful orange to red fruiting body.
